Week 2, Day 4: Spectacular, Spectacular - SLJ

DAY 4: Spectacular, Spectacular

Activity 1: Planes, Trains and Automobiles [4 points]
Arguably, one of the most dramatic and spectacular (beautiful) places to visit in New
Zealand is Milford Sound. It has been referred to as the ‘eighth wonder of the world.’ It is a
beautiful fiord (steep valley) that was formed when big pieces of ice (glaciers) melted. The
melted glaciers created a beautiful river that is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and
snow-capped mountains. People who visit Milford Sound are able to take a boat cruise
through the middle of the fiord, walk around the area on the Milford Track or fly above the
fiord as part of a private helicopter tour.
Let’s imagine that you had the chance to visit Milford Sound by boat, foot (walking) or air
(helicopter). Which option would you prefer?
On your blog tell us which of the three options you would take to explore Milford
Sound. Be sure to tell us why you have chosen this option.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After I was given 3 options of a way to explore Milford Sound, I decided to go with the Boat.
I´ve chosen a Boat because you get incredible views that are surrounding you and can
explore more, just looking around. I also wanted to go with the boat because it's less noisy
and you can stop, look around for quite a bit and go for another spin in the Boat. My
reason why I didn't choose the helicopter is because they make so much noise which will
distract you from enjoying your trip. Another reason is because you would have to yell
just to talk to the pilot or anyone else in the Helicopter. My reason why I didn't choose to
walk was because it will take for hours to explore the whole of Milford Sound and all your
doing is basically walking. Although your only walking you can explore more?. Overall
my final answer would definitely have to be the boat.
Activity 2: It’s All in the Name [4 points]
Rotorua is one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations. It is a city filled with
incredible forests, mountain biking tracks, lakes, and geothermal wonders, including hot
springs (geysers) and mud pools. One of the most famous geothermal pools is called the
Devil’s Bath at Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. It is a neon green pool of stinky water.
Over the years, people have suggested that we come up with a new name for the pool.
What do you think we should call it? Take a minute to let your creative juices flow.
On your blog, give us a list of three to five options for the name of this geothermal
pool. Put a star (*) beside the name that you like the most.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this task I was to come up with 3 - 5 options of names for the geothermal pool. Instead
of doing 3 or 5 I chose to do 10, Hope you enjoy!
1. Wild Green Forest.(*)
2. The Green Lushed Lake.
3. Baby Green Gem Pool.
4. Bright Kiwifruit Water pool.
5. Green Crunchy Lake.
6. The Green Liquid Slime Smoothie.(*)
7. Light Green Water Valley.
8. Juicy Green Waterworks.
9. Green Turquoise Smelly Pool.
10. The Green Vicious Lake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 3: Picture Perfect [10 points]
While New Zealand is home to some beautiful waterfalls, there are a number of
stunning waterfalls in places like Canada and South Africa. In Canada, the largest
waterfall is called Niagara Falls. It sits on the border between Canada and the
United States of America. Thousands of tourists flock (go) to Niagara Falls every
year to see the falls and to have their picture taken in front of this natural wonder.
Over the past few years people have started taking ‘selfies’ and posting them online.
Do you ever take selfies?
On your blog, write a short story about what you think is happening in the
picture. Be sure to tell us where you think the people are and what you think
they were doing at the time that they stopped to pose for the selfie. To earn
full points, the story must be 8 – 10 sentences long.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all I do take selfies, and I think I have a bit of an idea of why they stopped to
take a photo. I could be right but then again I could be absolutely wrong. I think
they´re celebrating a type of sports due to the amount of people surrounding the
one camera. I think the type of sport could be either Cricket, Rugby or Baseball, but
I have no idea. Out of all the sports I pointed out I think the game could be Cricket,
because a lot of them look like Cricket players. I also think everyone surrounding
the camera are huge fans of the guy in the dark blue shirt, as there are so much
people surrounding him, smiling and doing signs. I think they could be taking the
photo straight after the game as the man in the dark blue shirt looks a bit tired and
stressed. I have a feeling the photo is taken in New York, America, I have no idea
of where they might be but I´m just guessing. Overall I think they've taken this photo
in the United States Of America in New York, Just after watching they're famous
celebrity play one of the sports I pointed out before. Finally I think everyone
surrounding the man is his biggest fans due to how much people are around him.

Task Description:
For this task I was to complete another day of this weeks Summer blogging. Today I
completed day 4. For the first activity I was to choose out of a boat, helicopter or to
walk so that I get to explore Milford Sound. For the second activity I was to come up
with 3 - 5 options of names to give the geothermal pool which is placed in Rotorua,New Zealand. For the final task I was to write a story that includes 8 - 10 sentences about what was happening in the picture I had selected. For more information feel free to check out my blog post and final post for today. Enjoy and Happy New year!

  1. Kia ora Hinerangi,

Wow. You are doing such an incredible job with the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. I am absolutely amazed and really impressed by each of your posts. I particularly like the way that you have included a task description for each day at the bottom of your post. I can see that you have put in a huge effort with each activity and often gone 'above and beyond.' Activity #2 is a great example of this - instead of posting 3-5 name options, you chose 10! Of the ten, I must admit that I also really love the 'Green Liquid Slime Smoothie' as a name. What a great suggestion!

I am very aware that you have posted equally creative and thoughtful posts for the other days of the SLJ as well. Please know that we are reading all of your work and keeping track of the activities that you have completed in our master spreadsheet. When our full team returns in early January, we will provide comments for all of your activities. I know that Sophie, Lee, Izzy and Patricia (the commenting team for the SLJ at Pt England) are really looking forward to it!

Bye for now from the SLJ team,

    Rachel :)

  3. Greetings Hinerangi!
I have decided to comment on your blog again. Right now I have 350 comments but it isn't on my blog yet. I am trying to do 20 or 30 more comments before 10 PM. What is the hardest blog post doing?

    Keep it up!
