SLJ: Making a Fashion Statement:)

Activity 2: Making a Fashion Statement
In the years following World War II, things slowly returned to normal in New Zealand. Soldiers returned home and settled back into regular life; and national sporting teams, like the New Zealand cricket team, got back together and started playing matches again. In the late 1940s, men and women would go to watch these events, men wearing hats and suits and women wearing dresses, hats, and gloves.

Compare the pictures of common clothing from the late 1940s to what you wear now (i.e. in 2017). Are they similar or are they quite different?

On your blog tell us which of the two styles you prefer and why. The pictures above were taken over 65 years ago! What do you think people will
be wearing 65 years from now?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I have chosen the kids style as it is more of me & I am still a kid. I would rather prefer the kids style as I've never warn hats like that, I've never seen myself wear a dress in 5 years & I really want to see what It'll be like to be in the 1950's as I've never been in those days before, ( Obviously ). I would also prefer the kids style as it is the kind of clothes I use to wear & is kind of how I used to dress up like.

I think people all around the world wear clothes like........

T - Shirts, Jeans, Track Pants, Overalls, Shorts, Leather Jackets, Jumpers, Vest, Suits, Skirts, gloves & much more other clothes that I just can't remember / name. So these kind of clothing I think people all around the world wear.

I really hope use enjoyed & I do hope use all stay tuned for more upcoming blog posts,
Thank you for visiting my blog:)

SLJ: Dealing with stress:)

Activity 1: Dealing with Stress
Image result for stress
In New Zealand, many people lost their jobs during this decade. Experts predict that as much as 30% of the population was unemployed. It was a very stressful time for families.

Sadly, many of us still experience stress in our lives to this day. When I feel stressed I try to go for a walk or pop into my local gym for a quick workout. Exercise makes me feel better. What about you?

On your blog, please tell us what you do when you want to relax or de-stress. Do you read a favourite book, watch a favourite television show or talk to someone special?  What are your tips for dealing with stress?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Image result for stress
What I do when I relax or de - stress, is that I either watch one of my favourite TV shows or lay down on the couch. The main TV shows I normally watch is either Shortland Street, Home and away, Neighbours or Robin Hood as it is my favourite brothers cartoon TV show.

When I am stressed I get really annoyed at kids if they............

1: Run around the house after we've cleaned it up ( This is all related to my little brother by the way)

2: Disturb the Movie / TV show we were just watching.

3: Stash rubbish into different kinds of furniture ( Mainly the couches )

4: Messing up the bedrooms / lounge / dining room / kitchen especially when we have just cleaned up these areas of the house ( everything was polished )

When I am not stressed I either read a chapter book or even a comic book. I also have a mini talk with one of my close family members which is my incredible Auncle, his name is Jeremey. I also had a mini pep talk with him early this morning.

So there we have it, here are most of the things I do when I am relaxing or de - stressing & how much I get so annoyed at kids when I am really stressed out. Thanks for reading my blog post about Dealing with stress. I hope you enoyed. Is any of this related to you or about you ? I hope use all enjoyed!

Happy New Year everyone:)

SLJ: popular Culture:)

Activity 1: Popular Culture – The Silent Movie
The 1920s saw a massive surge in the number of people going to the movies. Huge new cinemas were built in both Auckland (The Civic Theatre) and Dunedin (Empire De Luxe).  The most popular type of movies showing at local NZ cinemas were ‘silent’ films. Gold Rush is an example of an iconic silent film. It features a famous actor named Charlie Chaplin.

Watch the trailer for Gold Rush. On your blog, tell us what you think the movie is about. There are no words spoken movie so you will need to pay careful attention to what the actors are doing! Do you think you would enjoy watching a silent film? Why/Why not?
--------------------------------------------------
Activity 1: Popular Culture – The Silent Movie

What I really think this movie is about is that everyone that was in this film was extremely hoping to find a much more better life by searching for a lot of gold. As I was watching the movie I could see 4 people called the 4 destinies, which was:

The adventurer
The out law
The dancer
& the tramp.

To be honest I would not like to watch a silent film that has absolutely no sound in it. I would also not like to watch a silent film as everyone around you would be disturbing, annoying & absolutely no chance for all of us to be focussing on the Screen / Television. This film was alright to watch but all we were missing was a bit of sound.

So I would actually prefer not to watch a silent film:)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 2: Art Deco

In the 1920s a new artistic movement emerged in New Zealand (and around the world). It was called ‘Art Deco.’ The picture to the right is a classic example of an ‘Art De
co’ piece. Take a close look at the painting. Do you like it?

On your blog, give the painting a rating out of 5 stars (1 star = terrible painting, 2 stars = pretty bad painting, 3 stars = okay painting, 4 stars = good painting and 5 stars = amazing painting). After you’ve rated the painting out of 5, tell us why you gave it that rating.

--------------------------------------------

As I am looking at this stylish painting I am really surprised on how incredible the painting looks like. So you might be able to guess what rating I am about to give the painting. Today I am going to rate this amazing, incredible & fabulous painting a 5 star rate. The reason why I choose 5 is because it looks so beautiful as if this was just someone in a car taking a picture.

This looks so significant & incredible. Who ever drew this fantastic paintings I would love to meet you in person as you have drawn this with awesome pride. Awesome painting.

So today I have rated this painting of a 5:)

SLJ Bonus Activity: Crossing the Tasman

Bonus Activity: Crossing the Tasman
In 1928, a crew of four men flew, for the first time, across the Tasman from Australia to New Zealand. One of the men on board the Southern Cross airplane was a New Zealander named T.H. McWilliams. His job was to operate the radio in the airplane. Unfortunately, the radio stopped workin
g shortly after take-off and the rain and ice were so heavy that the pilot, Kingsford Smith, couldn’t see out of his front windscreen. Yikes! Fortunately, the plane made it all the way across the Tasman landing in Christchurch after a 14 hour trip.

Imagine that you were a member of the flight crew. Write a poem that describes how you would have felt when you landed safely in Christchurch after such a long trip. Remember, there are lots of different types of poems, and they don’t all have to rhyme. You can read more about different types of poems by clicking here.

---------------------------------

After traveling for a very long time
We finally landed at a place near by
The place was Christchurch
& I was with Tristan

It was great to see everybody
& I was standing right next to my buddy
her name is Charlie
she loves to eat Bar leaves

It was awesome to be home
as I really missed seeing the gnomes
I cant wait to see my family
cause they are all very lovely.

Thanks for getting us home safely:)

SLJ Bonus Activity: Paying it forward

Bonus Activity: Paying it Forward

In the mid-1930s, things began to change for the better in New Zealand. More people were able to find work and receive a steady paycheck. They were still careful, however, with their money and rarely, if ever, bought treats or gifts for one another.

Imagine that you were able to travel back in time to visit a family in the 1930s. What special gifts or treats would you like to bring with you? I would likely bring blocks of Whittaker’s chocolate, bags of Jet Planes and Pineapple Lumps, healthy food snacks, clothing, and games for the children. What about you?

--------------------------------------------------------------

If I was to go back in time & visit a really grateful & delightful family I would bring.....

  1. Block of Chocolates
  2. Clothes
  3. Food / drinks
  4. Presents
  5. money
  6. Games
If I was to go back in time I would want to take these kind of items to a family in the late 1930's. I would like to take these to people I haven't seen especially to people who have humongous families. These are the items, objects I would take to people back in the 1930's.

SLJ Bonus Activity: Women At work

Bonus Activity: Women at Work
Both men and women served in World War II. Many women chose to enlist as nurses and be stationed overseas caring for wounded soldiers. My nana was one of those nurses. She (Dorothy) spent much of World War II working on a large Red Cross ship that was stationed off the coast o
f Cairo, Egypt.

For this activity, you are going to imagine that you are just like Dorothy and that you are working as a nurse on a large medical ship.

One day you are walking along the deck of the ship when you hear a loud bang. You start to run as you see smoke coming from the far end of the ship. You run towards the room where your patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor. Just as you arrive at the door to their room you hear another loud bang and you…
___________________________________________________

start to run to where I heard the humongous bang. As I was running I could see & hear more bangs coming from the front of the ship. So I ran straight to the front of the ship, as soon as I got there I could see other doctors running & screaming as there were lot's of bombs shooting from out of the sky. Suddenly the Ship started to fall apart & everyone including me that was in the ship had sank. We were all in the middle of nowhere. Swimming to the closest near by there were 3 dolphins & 2 Whales coming our way, everyone was really scared as they all started screaming. As fast as I could I started swimming to the closest near by & 3 of the dolphins swam straight after me.

Suddenly I had started to drown as my arms & legs became to be entirely sore. Swimming straight after me the dolphins had saved myself & my friends & had gotten all of us to the safest near by land. 51 minutes later....

We all thanked the dolphins but unfortunately 8 of us did not survive as the boat did sink & everyone fell in the deepest part of the ocean. We were so grateful to still be alive as the dolphins did save all of us. The dolphins were all great help & all of us said THANKS TO THEM.

SLJ Bonus Activity: Sweet tooth

Bonus Activity: Sweet tooth

When World War II ended, a number of people from Europe moved to New Zealand looking for a peaceful place to live and raise a family. When they came, they brought recipes and foods from their native countries with them, including hamburgers, pizza and other delicious foods.

I usually have a chocolate chip cookie with my tea. I love biscuits! What is your favourite sweet treat or dessert? Use google to find a recipe for it. Type the recipe out on your blog. Make sure you also include a picture.

---------------------------------------------------------
Oreo Cookies and Cream Trifle
1 package of Oreos
3-4 cups of whipped cream
1 chocolate cake (9×13 is best, any recipe.)
4 cups of Oreo pudding (chocolate or vanilla would also work.)
Set aside about 15 Oreos to line the sides of the trifle. Crush the remaining Oreos. Cut your cake into cubes, whip your cream, and make your pudding.  Start layering the ingredients in a trifle dish or large bowl.  Start with pudding, then alternate with cream, Oreos, pudding and cake. Layer until all ingredients are gone, and finish with whipped cream and some Oreos on top. Chill before serving.Image result for cookies and cream trifle
----------------------
For this cookie & cream trifle we use a full package of Oreo's, a box of cookies & a cream pudding.
Make your chocolate cake - use your most favorite recipe or make it from a huge mix.
Crunch up about 20 Oreo's, leaving about 15 Oreo's to line up the trifle.
Whip up all your cream to make the pudding. We all used the oreo pudding and then taste it. It is a really easy dessert to create for the whole family. Regular chocolate or vanilla pudding will work for this recipe as well.

SLJ Bonus Activity: Interviewing Billi Kini:)

Bonus Activity: #EarnTheFern
After the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, New Zealand became a British colony. Many other countries in the world are also British colonies including Canada, South Africa, Australia, India and Malaysia. As a group they were, and still are, called the ‘Commonwealth’ countries. Years ago, a man named Melville Marks Robinson was asked to organize a sporting competition for people living in the Commonwealth countries. It is called the Commonwealth Games. The first ever event took place in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.

Athletes from New Zealand have competed in the Commonwealth Games for years. In the most recent Commonwealth Games event in Glasgow, Scotland New Zealand athletes won a total of 45 medals. The next Commonwealth Games will be held in 2018 in the Gold Coast, Australia. Hundreds of athletes are competing for the chance to represent NZ at the games (to 'Earn the Fern').

One of New Zealand’s gold-medal-winning Commonwealth athletes was a man named Bill Kini. Bill won a gold medal at the 1966 Commonwealth Games for being the best heavyweight boxer. He was a man of many talents! He played rugby in Ōtāhuhu in the 1960s and later moved to Whangarei.

Imagine that you could interview Bill. What would you ask him about his time at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. What would you want to know? I’d like to know how he had time to train for two sports at once.

SLJ Bonus Activity Special Meal:)

Back in the 1800s, most Māori ate a simple diet. They ate foods that they could catch in the water (eg. fish) or grow on the land (eg. kumara). They did not have access to a supermarket to buy food for their meals! Speaking of meals, what is your favourite meal? Mine is wood-fired pizza. Yum!

Image result for Butter Chicken on Rice
For this task we had to post a picture of one of our favorite meals you love / like to eat & write a couple of sentences.
Butter Chicken on Rice:)

Butter Chicken on rice is one of my favorite meals of the day as you can taste so many different flavors & different kinds of sauce's as well. I really enjoy eating Butter Chicken but I hate it when I see other people watch me eat it, which is why I give them some before eating it. The best homemade maker of creating Butter Chicken on Rice is my incredible aunt, she is the best Butter Chicken maker ever. I love the different flavors, different kinds of herbs & it is really healthy. I really enjoy eating Butter Chicken on Rice because my mouth goes mouth - watering. Butter Chicken on Rice is such an amazing meal & I hope it is for you as well. Sorry but I do not know the recipe ( Because my aunt always says, a chef never tells a recipe secret. I hope you enjoy eating it as much as I do & that you just have heaps of fun eating that delicious meal.

Thanks for reading my Butter Chicken on Rice blog post!
Thanks for visiting my blog:)

SLJ It's all in a days work:)

Activity 1: A House or a Home!

In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

_________________________________________________________________

Activity 2: The Rules of Engagement!

Women were expected to have babies and remain in the home caring for their children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men, on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home. These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path in life. In fact, I was lucky enough to go to university and to follow my dream of becoming a teacher!

When I grow up I really want to become a teacher as I got inspired by the most incredible teachers I have had so far at Pt England School. I would also like to become a teacher as I like to communicate with other kids & I would love to see myself improve by teaching younger ones what they need to learn. I really hope I get the chance to become a teacher & that people around the world who are wanting to become a teacher does. Good luck to me in the future!

SLJ Acknowledging Ancestry:)

Activity 2: Acknowledging Ancestry:)

All of us are members of a family. Some of us have large families and some of us have very small
families. When I have the opportunity to talk about my family and my ancestry I sometimes choose to
use a pepeha. It is a very special way of identifying who I am and where I come from.
There are many different versions of pepeha but most provide people with information about who
you are and where you come from (i.e. your whakapapa).
Ko Mataka te Maunga
Ko Tokerau te Awa
Ko Mataatua te Waka
Ko William, Martha toku tipuna
Ko Nga Puhi toku Iwi
Ko Ngati Rehia te Hapu
Ko Heruhama te Marae
Ko Hinerangi ahau

Ko Maungarei te Maunga
Ko Tamaki te awa
Ko Waitemata te moana
Ko Ruapotaka te Marae
Ko Ukutoia te Papa
Ko Hinerangi Ahau

SLJ Bonus Activity: Waka Ama:)

Well you might be able to guess what our task is today. For this task I was told to watch a short video clip about a Waka Ama Race. A few minutes after watching the video I would have to write a short story on my blog If I would want to participate in this water sport ( Waka Ama!

 Image result for waka ama

I would love to participate in this incredible Sport as I have never participated in any kind of water sport before. I would also like to participate in Waka Ama because it is a great sport & I would love to know what It'll actually feel like to paddle hard & fast, how far I could paddle without any stopping & having to get to know other people / communicate with others. Waka Ama is such a great sport for everyone out there who love to be around water. As I was watchng the movie I could see how much training It'll take all of them to finish off the race. To me this kind of sport looks a bit challenging & a bit of work to do. I would definetely like to give Waka Ama a go some day!

WK 1: In the Beginning, SLJ!

Wk 1: In the Beginning ( 1800 - 1870:
Day 1: Arriving in Aotearoa
Activity 1: The first settlers:)

It is widely believed that the first people to arrive in New Zealand came from Polynesia. Most historians believe that they landed in New Zealand over 700 years ago. Although they were originally from many different countries, these settlers learned to live together and, eventually, formed their own distinct culture known as ‘Māori.’  Māori have their own language, traditions, and culture.

Follow this link to read a short story about a famous man in Māori mythology – Maui. On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man. What other stories have you heard about Maui?

Stories of Maui:)

- Maui and the sun
- Maui and the giant fish

3 interesting facts about Maui!

Fact 1: Maui's brothers did not believe in Maui until he said I'll prove them all how good / awesome I am.

Fact 2: Maui's mother would always get mad at Maui as she never get's time to finish off her work, which is why Maui got hooked by his brother's ( This description was found on this link here!

Fact 3: Maui was such a good boy as well as a caring & kind sun. He loved his family so very much & had finally noticed that he had to slow down as everyone was getting a bit mad at him, but then he turned out to be a good sun.
