Week 3, Day 1: A Heated Debate - SLJ

WEEK 3: Up, Up and Away

DAY 1: A Heated Debate

Activity 1: Togs or Trackies? [4 points]
New Zealand is a pretty lovely place to live, isn’t it? Apparently, New Zealand (NZ) is also
a pretty lovely place to visit. In 2017 approximately 2-3 million people came to visit NZ as
tourists. Some of them chose to come in the middle of our summer, while others braved it
and came in the middle of winter! When do you think is the best time of year (season) to
visit NZ?
If you would like some help making a decision, feel free to read the Go New Zealand website.
It has lots of information about the seasons in NZ!
I, personally, encourage my friends and family from overseas to come and visit NZ in early
spring. The weather is usually warm and dry and the tourist attractions, beaches and holiday
spots are less busy than they are in the middle of summer.
On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for tourists for come and visit.
Be sure to share at least three things that tourists could do while they were here in NZ
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With only four seasons in a year I've decided to go with Spring. I´ve chosen Spring because
in Summer it's the busiest time of year, in Autumn you get very cold at night and Auckland
always ends up with loads of crowds ( especially at sport games ), Last but not least Winter.
I really don't think visiting New Zealand in Winter is a very great idea due to the amount of
coldness their is, especially if you have children with you. So the season I would go with
would have to be Spring, I really think this a fantastic time for tourist people to visit as you
get to see amazing locations, visit the incredible sky tower, and most of all you can visit
the wonderful Beaches we have. I think it's a better idea to visit New Zealand in Spring
Season as its less busier, more locations to be at and the temperature is incredibly warm,
which will be fantastic for you and your family.

Activity 2: You are my Sunshine [4 points]

People in New Zealand love spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, the sun is very
powerful and the rates of skin cancer are incredibly high in New Zealand. In fact, they
are higher than anywhere else in the entire world! To protect ourselves against skin
cancer, we need to be careful about how much time we spend in the sun. We have to
be ‘Sunsmart.’

Read the Sunsmart website.

On your blog, list five different things that we can do to protect ourselves from the
sun this summer!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a little document I´ve created for you, Enjoy!

Activity 3: Burning Up… [15 points]
While it can get hot in New Zealand, especially in the middle of summer, it gets even hotter
in places like Dallol (Ethiopia), Dasht-e Loot (Iran), Tirat Zvi (Israel), Kabili (Tunisia)
and Bandar-e Mahshahr (Iran).
The hottest temperature on record in each place is: Dallol: 41oC; Dasht-e Loot: 71oC; Tirat
Zvi: 54oC; Kabili: 55oC; Bandar-e Mahshahr: 51oC. Crazy ‘eh?!
For this activity, you are asked to use this information to create a graph. The graph should
have a title along with the names of each city and their hottest recorded temperatures.
You can draw the graph by hand or use a computer programme like Google Draw to
create your graph. It’s completely up to you!
Here is an example of a graph:

Task Description:

For this task of Week 3, Day 1 I was to write a text about what´s the best season to visit New Zealand and my answer to that was Spring, the next activity was based on protecting ourselves from the sun the main one that should be on your list is Sunscreen, And for the final activity I was to create my own graph about the hot temperatures I was given to me. Overall I really enjoyed todays task and hope to post more similar to todays task. Enjoy week 3´s post. Enjoy it and Happy New Year!

Spring is a beautiful time to visit New Zealand. On of my favourite springtime activities is to go to Cornwall Park and take a walk. I love to watch all the new born lambs and look at the trees sprouting new leaves. If you were to recommend three activities for tourists to do once they arrived in New Zealand, what would they be and why?

Great sun smart tips! I really like how you recommend that people wear appropriate clothing. I often see people walking around in the middle of summer with heavy hoodies on. While they will protect your skin from sunburn it can be just as dangerous to wear too much clothing as you can over heat. A nice light layer that covers your skin is all you need.

Your graph looks great. I love all the colours that you have used. It really makes it pop. Next time you may want to try adding labels to the axis so we know what they are e.g name of city and temperature. This makes it even easier for me to read your graph.

I was so impressed to see that you had finished the SLJ. Keep up with your blog commenting and you will be in with a chance to win a prize.

    Bye for now.

  2. Kia Ora Hinerangi ,

I love all three activities that you have created! You have choose such a great season for tourist to come a visit New Zealand! I also choose Spring because that's when flowers bloom and tourist love to take pictures at beautiful sites. For Spring what do you like to do the most? I enjoy spending time outside in the warm weather. Also , sometimes I like to go out to other places. Do you know any other places we could visit during the spring season?

Specking on seasons , I love all of the ideas you came up with to protect out skin from the sun. It is very important to wear sunblock all the time and to wear sunglasses and big hats to also protect our skin from the sun. I love spending time in the sun and these tips on keeping myself not getting cancer is very helpful.

Your last activity is also great! To make the bar graphs they were hard for my so I drew out on a piece of paper. Hopefully one day you can teach me on how to make bar graphs just in case be get told to make a bar graph.

Anyways , you doing a great job at summer blogging. I bet your going to win this year!

    Cheers ,
    Leilani.
